Have you heard about our BAND messaging system?
We have a messaging system for parents and students, named BAND. It's a free service where we post information about upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, updates to the schedule, and other important information. It's essential during the fall Marching Band season and during concert season for Festival, the Memorial Day parade, and Commencement. We can send out immediate updates to our itinerary that you receive right to your phone. Parents and students may ask and answer questions within their own parent and student groups.
If you're not already signed up, please email Mrs. Stark for an invite code -- [email protected]
It's fast, it's free and it's full of information!
I would like to chaperone Band Camp or volunteer during the Marching Band season.
How do I apply?
Thank you! We are always looking for parent volunteers to help during Band Camp and the Marching Band season! Please click on the 'Request for Authorization to Volunteer' button below to download a volunteer form. Once completed, you may scan and email it to Mrs. Stark. The form is relayed to the Administration Office, where they conduct a background check to clear you to volunteer. One form, renewed yearly, allows a parent to volunteer across the Gull Lake Community Schools district. Mrs. Peters will form a Band Camp chaperone team and the volunteer team from approved adults. We will publish a SignUpGenius to sign up for Band Camp shifts and hold a chaperone meeting closer to the start of Camp.
As a safety precaution, only adults who have completed the form and been approved by Gull Lake Community Schools will be allowed to volunteer with the students.
What kind of volunteer opportunities are there?
From Prop Team to Feed the Band, there are volunteer opportunities for everyone throughout the Marching Band season. Most positions do not require any special skills or training - if you want to help, we will find the perfect job for you!
The Prop Team helps design, engineer, and fabricate the props necessary for the competitive show. Glue guns, paint brushes, power tools, and construction experience are welcome, but not required! Most of the work occurs during the summer rehearsals, before Band Camp, but finishing touches and enhancements continue throughout the season.
Our Trailer Drivers use their own vehicles to pull the band trailers. They help the students load props and instruments on and off the trailers, and transport the trailers to and from performances. A heavy-duty vehicle with a tow hitch is required.
Our Field Crew helps the students move props, sound equipment, and instruments such as front-line percussion pieces on and off the performance field. Have you ever wondered what Ford Field looks like from the vantage point of a Detroit Lion? Here's your chance to find out!
The Uniform Team ensures that every student looks their best on the field. Fittings for each student start early in the summer, and while alterations are an important part of the process, sewing experience is not a requirement. The Uniform Team helps students with getting dressed, hair, gloves, and loaner shoes, uniform malfunctions, and spot cleaning -- in short, everything they need to take the field. Team members take turns helping before each performance, including before and following each competition.
Feed the Band volunteers make sure that each student is hydrated and well-fed during Band Camp and on competition days so that they perform safely and to the best of their abilities. Not a confident cook? Not a problem! Our Feed the Band team donates supplies such as paper goods, bottled water, and non-perishables; prepares meals; serves and cleans up on competition days at GLHS or on-site (ask a veteran parent about the 2019 4:00 AM Rest Step Breakfast Burrito Party!) Watch for the GLBPA SignUpGenius for slots during Band Camp and competition days.
Our Chaperones help out during Band Camp as well as competition days and parades. While we would love to have you all day, every day during Camp, it's not a requirement to give up an entire week of your summer! We divide the day into shifts and will have a Sign Up Genius available to choose the times that fit your schedule best. Chaperones may be asked to help move props or equipment; make copies or take photos; fill (and refill and refill) water and Gatorade coolers; and assist the Camp staff when necessary, as well as being an extra set of eyes and ears for when the students need a hand. Camp days can be quiet (the type of day we actually hope for!) so bring a lawn chair, your coffee mug, and a good book and settle in for the duration. Competition days may find us needing an extra bus chaperone. We have a parent follow us in their vehicle for parades, carrying extra water and our medical bag.
Are you a Registered Nurse? EMT? Healthcare professional? Let's talk! Having a trained medical professional on-site during Band Camp and competition days is essential. While most marching injuries are minor - twisted ankles, sunburn, bee stings - there have been times when a situation has arisen that is outside of the basic first aid training our staff receives. Our medical professional will travel and stay with the band during Camp and on competition days and manage our medical files and supplies.
Is there a job that you think we've missed? Let us know! We are happy to use your skills in any way that makes our Gull Lake Blue Devil Band program more educational, fulfilling, and successful for our students.
My student does not participate in Marching Band. Can I volunteer?
YES! We love our volunteers! The Gull Lake High School Band program needs help all year long, not just during the Marching season. If you are willing to help, we are happy to find you a spot to do so. We may need help with fundraisers, chaperoning Festival or field trips, preparing for concert performances, and any number of other events. All adult volunteers are required to complete and submit the Gull Lake Community Schools 'Request for Authorization to Volunteer' form annually. Click on the button below to download the form; once completed, you may scan and email it to Mrs. Stark. As a safety precaution, only adults who have completed the form and been approved by Gull Lake Community Schools will be allowed to volunteer with the students.
Where should I email my completed form?
Scan and email your form to Mrs. Stark in the Band Office. We will take care of sending it to the Administration Office for processing.
